The long climb

Skin your kills cleanly and use the highest-tier animals available.

Animal	XP relative to Rat
Grizzly Bear	2×
Spider	3×

Rats and Mudcrabs give reduced XP from Hunting 40.

Rank	Reduced-XP animals	Full-XP options
70–89	Tigers and spiders give quarter XP	Scorpions, Slaughterfish and capped rare hides
90–100	Scorpions and Slaughterfish also give quarter XP	Capped rare hides only

Rare hides share a three-per-account daily cap, so the final ten ranks can take many days.

A Slaughterfish can also come up in a fishing net at sea, scales and all, with no knife needed (Fishing).
