Smithing

Smithing makes metal weapons, armour, tools and Repair Kits. Jewellery is made at a jeweller's bench and advances the same profession. Smelt ingots at a forge before using them at the anvil.

Repair Kits, replacement tools and jewellery are useful repeat products. Daily crafting writs can request Repair Kits, and crafted jewellery provides enchantment capacity and Arcane Essence when disenchanted.

Making money

Best tested NPC-gold recipe per ingot: Orcish Helms at rank 70. Best fixed silver: fill the Repair Kit writ when its displayed reward covers your inputs. For player sales, make to a commission or a demonstrated order instead of assuming that every Masterwork sells at a premium.

NPC gold: compare the recipe, not just the metal

These source-calculated NPC offers use the following assumptions:

Property Value
Condition Full
Quality Standard
Game settings Default
Shop quality 10
Mercantile 50
Personality 50
Price adjustment 1,000 (normal)

Actual offers change with shops, skills and settings. These examples are not measured farming rates.

Piece Inputs Example NPC offer (gold) After one craft fee (gold)
Orcish Helm 2 Orichalcum Ingots, 1 Cured Leather 20,093 20,043
Orcish Cuirass 6 Orichalcum Ingots, 2 Cured Leather 25,116 25,066
Orcish Dai-katana 5 Orichalcum Ingots, 1 Copper, 1 Cured Leather 12,558 12,508

The last column deducts only the 50-gold item craft: ore, leather, smelting, travel and tool costs still have to be paid. Among the 26 ordinary Orcish weapon, plate and shield recipes tested, the Helm gives the most gold per ingot. Do not turn a whole ore load into cuirasses simply because their individual selling price is higher.

Quartermaster is available at Smithing 100:

Smelting Ore per unit of work Ingots produced Ore for a 2-ingot Helm
Normal 2 1 4
Quartermaster 2 2 2

A shop smelt batch costs 50 gold for up to 100 units of work. Home stations remove use fees. Orichalcum comes from witnessed Orsinium Map and Wrothgarian surface veins and Motherlodes; see Mining.

Equivalent Daedric and Orcish weapon or plate patterns have the same NPC sale value after the Daedric reduction. Daedric smelting also consumes Hearts and Embers, so reserve it for your equipment or a paying player.

Clean work and quality bonuses improve equipment and player-sale potential without raising the NPC counter offer for their rolled bonuses.

Repair Kit writs

These are the current requests and payouts, before Quartermaster. They are drawn for the account, not selected freely, and share the three daily crafting-writ slots with Provisioning. Ingredient costs and any refining fees are additional to the craft fees shown.

Rank Kit Hand in Silver paid Craft fees (gold)
0 Iron Repair Kit 3 20 150
10 Steel Repair Kit 3 40 150
25 Silver Repair Kit 3 60 150
40 Elven Repair Kit 2 80 100
40 Dwarven Repair Kit 2 80 100
55 Mithril Repair Kit 2 100 100
70 Adamantium Repair Kit 1 120 50
70 Ebony Repair Kit 1 120 50
70 Orcish Repair Kit 1 120 50

For a two-Mithril-Kit writ:

Perk Crafts Mithril Ingots Cured Leather Writ pay (silver)
None 2 2 2 100
Quartermaster 1 1 1 100

Quartermaster makes two kits per craft. A one-kit request leaves a spare for later use or sale; extra output does not raise writ pay. Daedric and Warforged kits are not requested.
