Equipment and spellcasting

Armour and shields have no inherent spellcasting penalty. A shield does not increase casting costs either. Choose armour your class permits, then compare its protection, weight, enchantment capacity and magical bonuses.

Influence	Effect on magic
Intelligence and class	Determine your base maximum spell points.
Skill in the spell's school	Reduces casting cost. Online, school skill above 100 also strengthens offensive spells against creatures and beneficial spells you cast on yourself.
Speed	Increases casting speed.
Equipment bonuses	Can reduce spell cost, speed up casting or strengthen damage spells.
Firmament stars	Can improve spell points, school skills, casting speed, damage, resistance and casting cost.
Arcane specialisations	Add benefits that depend on your chosen path.

Armour rating protects against physical attacks. Resistance bonuses, protective spells and gems can help against hostile magic.
