Smithing — Smithing experience

A new pattern at a material tier pays 500 bonus XP. Jewellery shares this bonus with Smithing: changing a gem does not create another first-time recipe. Smithing gives repeat XP per piece; clean heat or facets improve quality without adding XP. Smelting gives XP per unit of work but no first-time bonus.

Material Rank Tier Craft XP Smelt XP per unit Quarter XP from rank
Iron 0 1 20 10 40
Steel 10 2 40 20 55
Silver equipment 25 3 60 30 70
Elven or Dwarven 40 4 80 40 90
Mithril 55 5 100 50 Never
Adamantium, Ebony, Orcish or Warforged 70 6 120 60; Warforged is a spoil Never
Daedric 90 7 140 70 Never
Silver jewellery 0 1 20 Uses raw metal 40
Gold jewellery 25 3 60 Uses raw metal 70
Platinum jewellery 55 5 100 Uses raw metal Never

Smelting has no rank gate, even if you cannot yet forge that metal. Its XP follows the ingot's tier and has the same low-tier penalty. A Quartermaster doubles ingot output without doubling XP. Brass gives 20 XP per unit before the low-tier penalty, but its output is not doubled. Charcoal gives no XP.

Activity Successful actions needed Minimum gap Cycle
Anvil 3 well-timed strikes 0.35 s 2 s heat cycle
Plain jewellery 3 facets 0.3 s —
Gemmed jewellery 5 facets 0.3 s —

The base facet window is 10°. At Smithing 100 it is up to 50% wider before Willpower and Luck modifiers. Letting a facet make two full turns loses it.
