Professions — Earning experience
XP is awarded per completed harvest or craft, rather than per item produced. Extra potions, servings, ingots or hides from a perk do not multiply XP. The figures below are base awards before first-time bonuses and other XP modifiers.
| Tier | Rank | Gathering XP | Clean gathering XP | Craft XP | Low-tier penalty from rank |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 0 | 15 | 22 | 20 | 40 |
| 2 | 10 | 30 | 45 | 40 | 55 |
| 3 | 25 | 45 | 67 | 60 | 70 |
| 4 | 40 | 60 | 90 | 80 | 90 |
| 5 | 55 | 75 | 112 | 100 | Never |
| 6 | 70 | 90 | 135 | 120 | Never |
| 7 | 90 | 105 | 157 | 140 | Never |
A recipe or node more than two tiers below the highest tier your rank opens awards only 25% of its base XP, rounded down. A clean tier-1 harvest therefore falls from 22 to 5 XP at rank 40. The first-time bonus is separate from this repeat-work penalty.
| Activity | XP tier | XP awarded per |
|---|---|---|
| Herb picking | Current profession rank | Completed pick |
| Fishing | Current profession rank | Completed haul |
| Basket search | Always tier 1 | Completed search |
| Cooking | Current profession rank | Dish craft |
| Masonry cutting | Current profession rank | Unit of work in the batch |
| Masonry mixing | Current profession rank | Unit of work in the batch |
Cooking, cutting and mixing give 20 XP per tier, or 30 for clean work. Common herbs still use your current rank’s tier.
Perfect timing adds 50% gathering XP. On equipment crafts it raises quality by one step instead of adding 50% XP. Cooking and the mason's cutting and mixing receive the 50% XP bonus because those products have no quality.
First-time recipes
| Craft | First-time bonus XP | What counts as a new recipe |
|---|---|---|
| Smithing | 500 | One pattern at one material tier, including jewellery |
| Outfitting | 511 | One garment or furnishing pattern at one material tier; dye does not create another bonus |
| Building | 1,823 | One pattern at one material tier; cutting stone and mixing Mortar each have one first-time bonus |
| Provisioning | 3,155 | Each potion and each dish; northern and southern herb versions share the dish bonus |
| Enchanting | 0 | No first-time bonus; XP comes from disenchanting |
Elven and Dwarven share tier 4, so the first Longsword made from either uses the same bonus. Adamantium, Ebony, Orcish and Warforged share tier 6. Changing a jewellery gem or dye does not give another bonus.
Linen- or Wool-only crafts qualify when the cloth is woven, spun or received from a guildmate and no silver-bought bolts remain counted against the craft. Woven cloth qualifies even when its raw ingredients were looted or bought. Silver-bought cloth does not consume the recipe's unused first-time bonus; try the pattern again with qualifying cloth. See Outfitting.
Water Breathing and Levitation never pay a first-time bonus and always make one potion. Most other brews make two potions before Master, or three with Brewer from rank 50. Disenchanting has its own XP calculation; see Enchanting. Court gathering writs pay twice their silver reward as profession XP.
