Weapon techniques — Getting a technique

To get a weapon technique, find or buy from another player a weapon that already carries that move. For bare hands, the technique is carried by gauntlets. There is no crafting recipe or item-maker enchantment that adds a technique to an item without one.

Ways to obtain or change a technique

Method Required item Effect on the technique
Loot Eligible Magic, Rare or Legendary weapon or gauntlets Can roll a technique when the loot is generated
Player trade An existing item with the desired technique Keeps the move already on that item; check its card before buying
NPC shop or quest reward Shop stock or a reward item Does not make the loot technique roll
Crafting Crafted equipment Does not add a technique; a crafted item cannot be Imbued into one
Item maker Eligible equipment Adds ordinary enchantments; cannot add, replace or copy a technique
Imbue Eligible found Magic item with an existing technique Promotes it to Rare, keeps the move and rolls its power in the Rare band
Hone (service) Existing technique below its tier's maximum Raises the power without changing the move
Reforge (service) A rerollable ordinary affix Cannot select the technique line or turn another affix into a technique
Imprint Eligible Legendary signature power Copies a signature power, not a weapon technique

These loot chances apply only after an eligible item has rolled the stated rarity. They are not the chance that any killed enemy will drop a technique.

Rarity Chance to roll a technique Technique power bonus Can Hone the technique?
Magic 12% +5–15% Yes, below +15%
Rare 30% +15–30% Yes, below +30%
Legendary 45% +30–50% Only an Exalted Legendary, below +50%

Aetheric and Gilded pieces do not make this random technique roll. The bonus increases the technique's own damage multiplier; it is separate from an ordinary skill enchantment.

Choose the right weapon family

Arrows and pellets cannot carry a technique. A move stays tied to its weapon family: to use Leap Strike on another Long Blade weapon, obtain another weapon that already has Leap Strike.

Upgrade a found technique weapon

  1. Loot or trade for the required move on the weapon family you use. Identify the item so its technique and power are visible.
  2. If the item is Magic and you want a higher power band, visit the Mages Guild's Reforge service and choose Imbue. Do this before adding item-maker enchantments. Unequip and unlock the item; it must be free of curses and socketed gems.
  3. Confirm the Magic-to-Rare promotion. Imbue keeps the technique's move, rerolls its power to +15–30%, and rerolls the ordinary affixes. Rare is the highest tier Imbue can produce.
  4. If you want ordinary enchantments too, use the Item maker at rank 5 in the Mages Guild or a temple of Julianos. Select the eligible weapon, choose powers and any side effects, and keep the selection within its enchantment capacity. The existing technique stays on the item.
  5. To improve an under-maximum technique, unequip the item, open Hone at the Reforge service and select its technique line. Each successful Hone raises the value by at least one point, up to the tier's maximum; the move stays the same.
  6. Equip the finished weapon, or the gauntlets for bare hands. See Weapon techniques for activation and combat controls.

Upgrade costs

Service Item before service Welkynd Shards Gold Result
Imbue Eligible plain found equipment 2 2,500 Magic, with no new technique
Imbue Eligible found Magic weapon or gauntlets 6 15,000 Rare; preserves an existing move
First Hone Magic 1 50 Raises the selected line within its Magic band
First Hone Rare 2 150 Raises the selected line within its Rare band
First Hone Exalted Legendary 4 500 Raises the selected line within its Legendary band

Every previous Hone on the item doubles its next Hone's shard and gold cost. Hone requires the loot ladder to be enabled and the item to be identified and unequipped. Ordinary Legendary equipment is not accepted by Hone.

For example, a Magic weapon with +15% Leap Strike cannot be Honed further as Magic. If eligible, Imbue promotes that same weapon to Rare and keeps Leap Strike with a new +15–30% roll. A Rare result below +30% can then be Honed. Imbue does not let you select a different move.

Which items can the item maker use?

Item Item-maker access Technique consequence
Found Magic weapon without classic enchantments Accepted if otherwise eligible Keeps an existing move; enchanting now blocks later Imbue
Identified Rare weapon Accepted; existing rarity enchantments are retained Keeps an existing move; add ordinary powers within the remaining capacity
Crafted weapon Subject to the ordinary item-maker eligibility rules Cannot gain a weapon technique from the item maker
Legendary, Aetheric or Gilded equipment Refused Cannot use the item maker to modify it

The item maker charges 10 gold per positive enchantment point before Enchanting profession discounts. Side effects supply more capacity without adding gold cost. See Enchantment capacity and Enchantment reference for individual budgets and powers.

Enhances Skill and Cast When Strikes are ordinary enchantments. They do not grant moves such as Leap Strike or Whirlwind. See Enhances Skill for the separate skill-bonus system.
